Love languages are ways of expressing and receiving love. The concept of them was introduced by Dr. Gary Chapman who distinguished five of them: physical touch, words of affirmation, acts of service, gift giving and quality time. Nowadays many will tell you there is one more which is undoubtedly underappreciated and not given enough attention. Music, also known as the sixth love language, has become an inseparable part of our lives simply making everything we do more enjoyable. It accompanies almost everything we do –  whether we are studying, taking long rides to school or chatting with friends at a café, music is most likely to be present. Nonetheless, in various forms, it has clearly become a universal language of forming connections and bringing us all together.

“Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to stay silent”. What Victor Hugo, French Romantic writer and politician, said well over a century ago is still applicable to this day. Music is precious in terms of human relationships, proved not only in romantic ones, but also friendships. It has the power to expose what bears one’s soul and express intense emotions that cannot leave one’s mouth. Therefore, it becomes an intimate experience that when shared with other people creates a special bond between them.

In various forms, music can manifest as a love language, such as writing songs, creating playlists, or sharing favorite songs. The act of creating songs or playlists becomes a meaningful gesture, reflecting genuine effort and appreciation. Especially in the era of Spotify, it has become so simple to share playlists and collaborate on them with your loved ones. Adding songs that remind you of each other and express what you feel towards that one person is such a beautiful act of affection that shows you were thinking about them and wanted to share your thoughts with them. Sharing favorite songs with somebody can be seen just as sharing deepest secrets. Having musical connection allows individuals to connect on a deeper level and further develop their emotional bond.

Music creates memories and experiences. All special moments in our lives could not be cherished without it. This is not accidental, as listening to music stimulates the release of endorphins in our brains, the hormone also known as one of the feel-good hormones. Experience of music often results in positive feelings, improved mood and good energy. Some people cannot find their own language and music becomes the only way they are able to connect and find common ground. When there is music present, we unite as people and no matter our differences, we gather together to sing aloud and celebrate. From lively parties to karaoke nights and concerts, we can all come together for a moment and forget about our worries. Imagine the world that lacks the richness that music provides where all we have is the harsh reality. Music enriches our lives by adding vibrancy and color to them. Melodies form memories, which are so precious in our existence, as our brains tend to create associations between songs and significant people or events. We should not underestimate the power of music – because it truly is powerful.
